The following brief bios of our Board of Directors and Staff highlight their qualifications.
Board of Directors, 2009–2010
Key Staff Members
Sally Hatchett
Sally returned to the Curry Senior Center Board of Directors in June 2008 when she moved back to San Francisco from 2 1/2 years in Boston. She first came to Curry through her involvement in the international service organization Soroptimist International and her interest in elder issues. Sally quickly developed a great admiration and respect for Curry, the people and the work. She has previously served on the Personnel Committee and the Space Committee and was the 2000-2004 Board President. Sally is the Regional Office Administrator for a national law firm and also volunteers at the Rose Resnick Lighthouse for the Blind. She is presently the President of the Board of Directors of Curry Senior Center.
Deborah Ogden
Deborah Ogden is a retired fundraiser who has worked with humanitarian and environmental organizations. Deborah established the planned giving program for Friends of the Earth. For ten years she was a docent at Audubon Canyon Ranch, introducing inner-city children to nature. Currently, she works with the Cityguide Walks organization. A graduate of Vassar College who served as Chair of her 55th reunion in 2004, Deborah is a long time volunteer with Curry Senior Center and the current Vice President.
Richard Sullivan
Richard A. Sullivan retired as the City and County of San Francisco Tax Collector after 42 years of service. A native of Finchburg, Alabama, he has lived in San Francisco over 50 years. Richard received a BA in accounting from San Francisco State University, a Masters degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University and numerous certificates in Budgeting, Action Planning, Administration, Organization and Public Treasury Management. He began his Civil Service career in 1958 and held many responsible positions with the City and County of San Francisco: Accountant, Auditor, Principal Auditor, Head Accountant, Chief Auditor and Deputy Tax Administrator. In 1994 he was appointed Tax Collector and served as such until his retirement on December 31, 1999. After retirement, Richard became an Enrolled Agent authorized to professionally prepare income tax returns and represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. He serves at the Treasurer of the Board of Directors of Curry Senior Center.
Dennis Kneeppel
Dennis joined the Curry Senior Center Board in November 2008. He is the Chief Nurse Executive at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and is committed to the care and well being of the under-served. Dennis has a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco, and is a recent Nurse Executive Wharton Fellow from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. He has a background in administrative and critical care nursing as well as clinical informatics. Prior to joining the Saint Francis Team in March of 2006, Dennis worked for Kaiser Permanente for three and 1/2 years and enjoyed a successful 20 year career at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Originally from upstate New York, Dennis is a long time Bay Area resident and owns a home on the Peninsula. He is the Secretary of the Board of Directors of Curry Senior Center
Walter DeVaughn
Walter DeVaughn joined the United States Air Force and had a military career for 25 years. After retiring from the military, he settled in San Francisco and worked for the records department of the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals while attending San Francisco State University. Walter received a B.A. in the field of Social Work. After retiring from the court system, he went to work at North of Market Senior Services, now known as Curry Senior Center, as a Social Worker/Case Manager. He continued in this career until retiring in 1995. Walter then joined the Board of Directors of Curry Senior Center in 1999 and continues in that capacity.
Cathy Murphy
Cathy joined the Board in March 2008. She and her husband moved to San Francisco in 1993. Presently, Cathy is the owner of the San Francisco office of Home Instead Senior Care. At Corporate Express in San Francisco from 2001 to 2002, she was the Vice President of Strategic Accounts for Northern California. Cathy has an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a BA from Siena Heights College.
J. Antonio Nierras
J. Antonio Nierras became involved in then North of Market Senior Services in June 2000. His past positions include membership on the Board President, Personnel Committee and Secretary of the Board. A practicing lawyer, he is firmly committed to supporting the health and welfare of seniors to foster dignity and independent living.
Susan Obata, MD
Dr. Obata grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. After a hiatus working at various jobs and traveling to Africa, she went to medical school at the UC Berkeley/UC San Francisco Joint Medical Program, graduating with an MS/MD degree. She remained at UC San Francisco, completing her residency in family practice at San Francisco General Hospital and Medical Center. Formerly the medical director of the Adult Urgent Care at SFGHMC, she is now the medical director of Community Health Programs for Youth, part of the SFDPH primary care clinic system which provides health care to youth. As a member of the UCSF Dept of Family and Community Medicine clinical faculty, she teaches medical students and residents.
Joyce Pierson
Longtime professional in the field of aging and activist in the Bay Area Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) aging network, Joyce Pierson currently serves as a consultant for the LGBT Elder Law Project sponsored by the National Center for Lesbian Rights, headquartered in San Francisco. A board member since 1992, Joyce continues to marvel at Curry Senor Center’s dedication to diversity and service delivery to all elders in need in the heart of the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
Michelle Wood
Michelle is a volunteer at the Curry Senior Center Meal Site, and a Board Member since June of 2008. She graduated from Indiana University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Business; major in Marketing and a minor in Speech Communication. She also played collegiate golf on a scholarship for the IU Big Ten Golf Team. Her professional experience has been in selling medical devices for over 13 years. Currently employed by C.R. Bard, Inc., she sells devices to urologists for treatment of kidney stones. Although, born and raised in the Midwest, her heart and home is in San Francisco. She’s lived here almost 10 years and loves working with seniors.
Key Staff Members
David Knego
David joined the management team of Curry Senior Center as the Executive Director in February 2007. David has a history working with the Civic Center and Tenderloin neighborhoods since 1989. Most recently David served as the Executive Director of Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly. He successfully expanded the agency’s volunteer-based programs supporting homebound and isolated elders. David also worked at Central City Hospitality House, a community center for low-income and homeless adults. He is a board member of Coalition of Agencies Serving the Elderly and he has served on the program planning committee for the American Society of Aging. David holds a Masters of Social Work Degree from San Francisco State University.
Gay Kaplan
Gay Kaplan is a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner and Director of Services at Curry Senior Center. Her career has focused on acute rehabilitation of adults and community-based geriatric care and services. Gay started her service at Curry Senior Center as a full-time Nurse Practitioner, providing primary care to patients in the community and at the clinic. She has been active in city-wide committees addressing the issues of work-force development, elder abuse, access to primary care, transportation, adult day health care, housing, and homelessness. She has served by appointment on the Interdepartmental Elder Abuse Committee, Treatment on Demand Planning Council, Adult Day Health Planning Council, and the Homeless Seniors Taskforce. She views Curry Senior Center as a model of comprehensive community-based care for low-income and frail seniors.
Rick Crane
Rick Crane is the Chief Administrative Officer at Curry Senior Center and has been involved with the center since 1992. For the past two years as CAO, Rick has overseen finances, contracts and grants, budgeting, and agency administrative systems. He plays a key role in formulating fundraising strategies, supports the Executive Director as staff to the Board of Directors, and serves as the Interim Executive Director in the director’s absence. Rick has a Master’s degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley and has experience and expertise in geriatric service delivery, non-profit management, program and facilities development, organizational planning, and fundraising/grant writing.
