For Curry Senior Center’s 50th year, we honor Richard Sullivan for his longevity, influence and support as a 33-year member of our Board of Directors. In the many board deliberations over the years, Richard’s clear and thoughtful guidance has helped Curry endure and thrive.

How We Got Here...

1971 San Francisco Public Health Department’s director, Dr. Francis J. Curry founded the North of Market Health Care Council to address the needs of the Tenderloin, the community he grew up in.
1972 July 12, 1972 - North of Market Senior Services was created by Dr. Curry and began operating out of Glide Memorial Church and the Tenderloin YMCA.
1974 Substance Abuse Program begins
1975 Case Management begins
1975 NMSS moves into a permanent spot at 333 Turk Street.
1982 Curry becomes a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and is a founding member of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium.
1983 Joins partnership with OnLok Senior Services and creates North and South of Market Adult Day Health
1985 “Shabbat Luncheon” is introduced for isolated Jewish seniors without access to Jewish activities or synagogues.
1987 With help from The Tavern Guild, NMSS hosts its first New Leaf Lunch Bunch an LGBTQ social group.
1990 Curry receives one of the first health centers to receive the federal Health Care for Homeless grant.
1991 NMSS implements the coordinated care model to better serve clients, providing an array of services in one location.
1994 Curry adds Russian, Laotian, Vietnamese and Tagalog speaking program assistants greatly increasing the capacity to serve diverse communities.
1999 North and South of Market Adult Day Health and Mercy Housing create Presentation Senior Housing, a housing project with social services onsite, building finished in 2004.
2000 Board of Directors purchases 315-321 Turk and begins renovations.
2003 321 Turk Street Apartments opens 12 units of housing for formerly homeless seniors.
2003 North of Market Senior Services is renamed Curry Senior Center in honor of Dr. Curry.
2004 315 Turk Street officially opens with office space, conference rooms and senior center. Clinic and basement office space is renovated.
2011 Curry’s primary care clinic reaches 10,000 annual visits.
2015 Peer to Peer program to reduce impact of social isolation begin.
2017 Curry secures funding for LGBT programs in partnership with Shanti.
2020 - 2022 Curry is the only senior center in the Tenderloin to remain open throughout the pandemic, providing in-person and remote services.
2024 Anticipated opening of Tech and Wellness Center in a new building at 500 Turk Street.

...Where We're Headed

2024 Curry to open Tech and Wellness Center

At Curry’s Tech and Wellness Center, seniors will experience a customized, safe place where they can gather with others to socialize and learn how to improve their health. Activities will include training on how to use mobile phones and tablets to access the essentials of daily living and health and wellness classes to improve balance, nutrition, and overall health.

The Hub will also be a designated site for LGBT and Southeast Asian senior programming. This site will augment programming at Turk, serving more seniors with more space.
