The Tenderloin community played a pivotal role in the city’s LGBTQ+ rights movement, serving as a haven for marginalized communities and the site of the Compton’s Cafeteria riot, a key event in the history of trans resistance. Today, the Tenderloin neighborhood is the first legally recognized Transgender district in the world.
