Pre-screening of ‘Wired for Connection’

Curry is thrilled to be hosting a pre-screening of the documentary ‘Wired for Connection’, which examines the detrimental effects of social isolation and loneliness on one’s health and the health benefits of social connection. The documentary will air on PBS on June 1st.

 

Some of Curry’s older adults are in the documentary as well, along with our Board member, Ashwin Kotwal, a professor of medicine and geriatrics at UCSF. The screening is on May 13th at the San Francisco Library’s Koret Auditorium from 1:30 – 4:30. This event is free and open to the public. You can watch a short trailer for the film on YouTube:

Hali Hammer recently retired from the City and County of San Francisco, where she served as Director of Ambulatory Care for the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN), the integrated delivery system of the SF Department of Public Health (SFDPH). Dr. Hammer is a family physician and has practiced at the Family Health Center at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) for almost 30years. 

Before becoming Director of Ambulatory Care for the SFDPH, Dr. Hammer held the positions of Director of Primary Care, Medical Director of the ZSFG Family Health Center, and Professor of Clinical Family Medicine in the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Hammer lives with her family in Berkeley.

Cecilia Mak

Cecilia joined Curry Senior Center in 2022, beginning as a Peer Outreach Specialist and Community Program Assistant before transitioning to the Case Management team. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics & Language Technology.

She enjoys working closely with clients while collaborating with her dedicated team to provide vital services and support for seniors in the Tenderloin, helping connect them to the resources they need to thrive.

Victor Sucy

 Victor Sucy is the Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA) Programs Manager at Curry Senior Center, where he oversees the Drop-In Center and Peer Supportive Services programs. He brings over five years of experience in behavioral health, community outreach, and program management, with a strong commitment to supporting low-income older adults.

Victor is driven by a deep passion for helping seniors overcome barriers throughout their aging journey. His work focuses on reducing loneliness and isolation by fostering meaningful social connections, promoting recovery-oriented care, and creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where clients feel safe, respected, and empowered to be their best selves.

As a collaborative and values-driven leader, Victor is dedicated to building strong, diverse teams and strengthening partnerships that enhance service delivery and community impact. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and has completed professional training in Human Resources. He is bilingual in English and Spanish and brings a culturally responsive, person-centered approach to all aspects of his work.

Jim Illig

Jim Illig has had a 45-year career in San Francisco’s nonprofit health and social services, from clinician to executive, advocate to commissioner, and grant seeker to grant maker. Jim’s contributions include directing community health strategies and investments for Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco and San Mateo; 18 years with Project Open Hand where he managed government relations and brought senior meals to Curry 25 years ago; serving two terms on the San Francisco Health Commission including as President; Executive Director for Baker Places and Continuum HIV Day Services in the 80s and 90s; and serving on the boards of many nonprofit organizations such as IHSS Public Authority, St. Mary’s Medical Center, and La Casa de las Madres.

As an advocate, Jim founded and led coalitions of service providers in the HIV/AIDS Provider Network, Human Services Network, Tenderloin Hunger Task Force, and worked with Curry’s leaders for decades to strengthen the Coalition of Agencies Serving the Elderly (CASE).

Jim lives in Bernal Heights with his partner of 35 years, Larry Dotz, and Ava, their rescued German Shepherd. Jim still officiates for weddings at City Hall as a volunteer Deputy Marriage Commissioner, and the County Clerk has estimated that over 30 years, he has joined over 13,000 couples in matrimony!

Diane Dwyer

Diane is a proud board member at Curry Senior Center and has emceed this fundraiser for 10 years. Diane’s mother-in-law, Katie Sharp, was a nurse at Curry for years: the love for Curry runs in the family!

Diane’s also a two-time Emmy award winning journalist and has worked in television journalism in the SF Bay Area for 25 years. She grew up with six brothers and sisters and credits the Irish gift of story-telling with her success in journalism, teaching and — now — real estate. She wears many hats and loves all of them!

Connie Perez Wong is a storyteller at heart, bringing over two decades of experience in luxury hospitality to her role as Creative Director at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco. Shirley Quitugua

Shirley Quitugua is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and brings 42 years of career and financial expertise with her to her role as the Board President of Curry Senior Center. In addition to Curry, Shirley also serves on the Board of Directors for Good Shepard Grace Center and has dedicated over 15 years of community service to San Francisco.

Shirley’s true love is for her husband John and their family. They have 2 sons and a beautiful daughter-in-law, but feel the most precious blessings from God are their 3 young grandsons who are responsible for opening their hearts to the simple things, reminding them that time is a precious gift and sharing that time with family and others is what truly fulfills their lives.

Daniel Beavers

Daniel Beavers is a collaborative leader and digital strategist dedicated to building strong, mission-aligned teams. Daniel has led cross-functional initiatives that improve systems, strengthen collaboration, and enhance service delivery. He is passionate about mentoring emerging talent, removing barriers that limit team effectiveness, and creating sustainable processes that empower staff to focus on meaningful impact.


Inspired by mission-driven organizations like Curry Senior Center, Daniel is committed to building software and systems that streamline workflows, reduce administrative burden, and enable staff to focus more fully on supporting the dignity and independence of older adults.


Daniel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a focus on Management of Organizations and Systems, as well as a Master of Science in Game Design, emphasizing Team Leadership and Human Factors, where he researched the importance of vertical integration in supply chains.

John Medina

John Michael Medina Jr. is the Support Services Program Manager at Curry Senior Center, where he oversees services within permanent supportive housing and coordinates closely with property management and partner agencies to strengthen housing stability, resident wellbeing, and access to relevant community resources. His role emphasizes collaborative service delivery and person-centered engagement to ensure individuals are supported with dignity, autonomy, and connection. With over a decade of experience in the community non-profit arena, John brings both strategic insight and deep commitment to service models that link residents with the right support, resources, and partnerships. He holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from California State University, East Bay.

Humberto Pinon

Humberto Pinon is a health educator with a soul and heart big enough to capture the minds and hearts of the older adults he has worked with over his 12-year career at Curry. While he is equally described as “whimsical” and “mad genius” in the same breath, he has always been known as kind and caring and has been an advocate for older adults.

Humberto supervises the Health Education programs at Curry, which cover several topics very important to the health and wellness of older adults and combine evidence-based health education curriculum with hands-on presentations, including cooking demonstrations and exercise. He earned his culinary degree in the Le Cordon Bleu program at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Scottsdale, AZ. There, as a starry-eyed, naive student, he realized that making people happy was just not enough. After working in the culinary industry in Arizona and New Mexico, he enrolled in New Mexico State University, where a failed attempt at a nursing degree led to a very successful Bachelor of Public Health Degree in 2015.

John McKinnon

John McKinnon is a Northern California native that began his career in the advertising business in Los Angeles. After working for 10 years on national broadcast campaigns for Fortune 500 companies, he relocated to New Orleans to focus on large scale events at Dietrich Destination Consultants.

John’s trend of excellence continued after Hurricane Katrina with a move back to San Francisco where he has been responsible for exclusive meetings & events in the City’s most beautiful venues, with an additional focus on the Napa Valley to the North, Monterey & Carmel to the South and Lake Tahoe to the East. In 2011 he formally launched Voila Events, which has also become a leader in the incentive market for their high-end experiential events.

He’s been a member of the San Francisco Travel Association since 2005 and was appointed to their Tourism Council in 2022 to promote the San Francisco region as a top global destination.

He has served on the Curry Senior Center’s Board of Directors since 2015 and was the President of the Board from 2017 to 2019.

Kealy Spring

Kealy is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (#93512) in the state of California and a Leadership Coach. She graduated in 2002 from USC and continued her studies, obtaining an M.A. in Communication from University of Colorado at Boulder and a M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Dominican University in San Rafael. Having worked in corporations both in the US and Australia, she now works with driven professionals often struggling with perfectionism, imposter syndrome, anxiety and depression in her therapy practice. As a coach, she works with new and emerging leaders to build their leadership skillsets. Kealy is a small business owner in SF with two companies: Spring Family Therapy Inc. and Spring Ahead Coaching. She has been member of the Curry community for over a decade and looks forward to continuing her support of the organization in her current tenure on the Board of Directors. In her free time, Kealy enjoys hiking, gardening and travel.

Isis Spinola-Schwartz

Isis Spinola-Schwartz is a real estate development executive with over fifteen years of experience implementing sustainable real estate development strategies across various asset classes. She is the Chief Sustainability Officer at Forge Real Estate Development and is enrolled in the MSc of Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford, England.
Isis began her career as a landscape architect and urban designer and is passionate about the development of affordable housing solutions, and the attainment of UN Development goal with a focus on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. She is committed to the mission of Curry Senior Center because of its mission to “Provide wellness, dignity & independence for seniors”. In her free time, she can be found kayaking on Richardson Bay, or hiking around San Francisco.

Diane Sklar

Diane Sklar is a semi-retired physician living north of San Francisco in Marin County. She spent her working career as an OB/GYN for Kaiser San Francisco. In 2020, she retired from Kaiser and began work part time for UCSF doing inpatient obstetrics.
Dr. Sklar has a strong commitment to community service both locally and globally. She has participated as a mentor to underserved youth locally, and participated in over 30 medical missions abroad. She has been on the Board of Directors for Curry Senior Center since 2016 . She is currently the Secretary and is part of the Executive Committee. In Dr. Sklar’s spare time, she enjoys bicycling hiking swimming and playing tennis and bridge. She also enjoys playing piano and quilting.

Richard Sullivan

Richard Sullivan is a member of Curry’s Finance Committee and has served on Curry’s board for 33 years in which he has held all of the Board leadership positions. Richard’s involvement in public service includes being a former Board member with the Hunters Point Boys and Girls Club, and being a member of the City and County of San Francisco’s Treasury Oversight Committee.
Richard retired from the City and County of San Francisco’s Tax Collector office after 42 years of service, in which he spent 6 years as the Director. Richard currently runs a tax consulting business in San Francisco’s Bayview District and is a lifetime member of the NAACP, California Society of Enrolled Agents, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

Since 2007, David’s been leading the charge to increase Curry Senior Center’s impact on the lives of San Francisco seniors in need. While at Curry Senior Center, he launched new programs, expanded the volunteer base, and led the organization through a rebrand. Prior to Curry Senior Center, David served as the Executive Director of Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, where he expanded the agency’s volunteer-based programs supporting homebound and isolated elders. He also worked at Central City Hospitality House, a community center for low-income and homeless adults. His current community involvement includes serving on the Board of Community Living Campaign and the Board of Community Technology Network, as well as serving as Board Vice President of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium. David holds a Master of Social Work Degree from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Biology and Psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
